Where did you grow up and what was your childhood like? Did you have any particular experiences/stories that shaped your adult life?
I live in Atlanta now, but I grew up in Vermont, way up by the Canadian border. I had a really nice childhood. I was born in the early ’70s, so we all played outside all the time. My mom was super involved in the lives of my sister and I, always volunteering at our school and bringing our friends to concerts! I had loads of friends, I really liked growing up and feel super lucky.
When I was 16, my mom and my sister left to go on a trip to see a hockey game out of state, and on their way, they were in a terrible accident and my mother was killed.
The thing is, it wasn’t an accident with other cars, it was just one car. My mother skidded off the road and went down an embankment and hit a tree. The ONE tree in the middle of a huge, empty field. One tree.
Why? Why did she hit that one tree? Because that is what she was focused on. What we focus on is a matter of life or death and it’s not just your physical life. What you focus on creates your entire reality and experience and it’s my mission in life to help people to see how they can create their own reality by becoming aware and adjusting their focus.
What is something you wish you would’ve realized earlier in your life?
How to forgive. And not forgive someone who is asking for forgiveness, but how to forgive someone who never would. Forgiveness is for us, and it’s so powerful!
What are bad recommendations you hear in your profession or area of expertise?
I hear loads of people talk about shifting your focus when something comes up that is uncomfortable, like memory or emotion from the past. When your subconscious serves up an uncomfortable memory, it’s because it thinks you are ready to heal it. Healing can take moments, but if you push it away and just adjust your focus to something different constantly, you’ll be running from that same emotion for years and years. Stay present, heal the emotion, THEN shift your focus and live free.
Tell me about one of the darker periods you’ve experienced in life. How you came out of it and what you learned from it?
When my daughter was a teenager she struggled with a lot of anxiety. The kind that takes you out of school for months at a time and nobody really knows how to help. It felt like things would just snowball the longer it took for us to find help. She suffered for a long time and seeing your kids hurt is one of the worst pains of all. In all that, I learned an important lesson about maintaining my own happiness in the face of suffering. I know that sounds strange. How could I be happy in the middle of all that? It wasn’t until I was able to do that, that I was able to find her the right help. I had to keep my focus and energy high so I could be the best advocate for her. That experience taught us all a lot.
What is one thing that you do that you feel has been the biggest contributor to your success so far?
I am relentless in my own growth. I am always wanting to know more about who I am and what I can do. I love challenges and am not afraid to work for things. I believe following your bliss includes effort. It’s just that the effort brings you joy. It means the struggle gives you satisfaction because you have the opportunity to rise above and grow.
What is your morning routine?
I get up “when the universe wants me to” or when my dog wakes me, whatever comes first! Usually, around 6:30 am. I walk the dogs which I love. Getting out in the air first thing in the morning feels amazing. After our walk, I feed them and then sit down to connect to my intuition. I have been doing this for almost 10 years and have developed a pretty close relationship with my inner guidance. I love this time in the morning! Some days I lift weights or stretch and then listen to an audiobook when I shower. Then I eat some breakfast and meditate or do hypnosis. After that is some creative time until my first appointment, which I try to never schedule before 10:30. That is a huge luxury that I appreciate every day!
What habit or behavior that you have pursued for a few years has most improved your life?
For many years now, I have spent time sitting and listening to my inner knower. I get the best messages during this time together! It’s always positive, it’s always a totally different spin on this and always feels like it lightens me. I usually tweet them out or I have a text community and I’ll text them special ones. It’s really fun to get their feedback on the message. We are all so connected, the messages always hit home for them too. (Not sure if you want to add this but —->If you want to join the text community you can text me at 770-343-3409)
What are your strategies for being productive and using your time most efficiently?
I really like using a timer to have focused time to work on one project, break and then dive back in. It keeps me off social media and on task!
What book(s) have influenced your life the most? Why?
I love books, either reading them or audible. Learning is really fun for me so there are a lot of books I could mention. A Course in Miracles definitely has had an impact on how I see the world. Of course, The Power of Now by Eckart Tolle, I’ve read it a few times and I always get a deeper understanding each time. All of Joseph Murphys works, I have them ALL both on audible and in print and they all worn out! So many! I could go on and on!
Do you have any quotes you live by or think of often?
“Everything is always working for me.” This mantra has given me so much peace over the years. Anytime something is happening that I don’t really like, I remember that it’s working FOR me, not TO me. This shift in thinking changes how I experience the situation and helps me to look for opportunities in every circumstance. I say this so many times a day!
