Where did you grow up and what was your childhood like? Did you have any particular experiences/stories that shaped your adult life?
I grew up in Calgary, AB with a family of 3 boys, loving parents, and always surrounded by sports. I have an identical twin brother, now living in Houston, and a younger brother and 9 older and 2 younger half or stepbrothers and sisters. So it’s a huge and complicated family story which I love. But being an identical twin made the competition a daily/hourly activity and we both still love it to this day. And it’s truly shaped every aspect of my career. And I just love sports, every one of them.
What is something you wish you would’ve realized earlier in your life?
To not be afraid to take risks and to be more entrepreneurial.
What is one thing that you do that you feel has been the biggest contributor to your success so far?
Always wanting to remain challenged and never being satisfied with the status quo and being willing to step out of my comfort zone. Also, public speaking.
What is your morning routine?
I’m awake at 5:20 to get myself to a CrossFit gym by 6 am. 6 am to 7 am workout. Then home to sit in my hot tub and read the Economist magazine for about 30min before I start waking up my two beautiful daughters for school. Then I’ll quickly get ready, spend a bit of time with the girls before leaving to be in the office at 9 am.
What habit or behavior that you have pursued for a few years has most improved your life?
My morning routine has been going now for about 5yrs and it’s completely changed my life. I feel better throughout the day, energized, have an amazing group of friends and it’s added to my confidence and quality of life.
What are your strategies for being productive and using your time most efficiently?
I have a very efficient routine with my email to ensure I don’t miss anything that comes through my inbox and I try and leave some times throughout the day to catch up. I spend a lot of time on the phone and in meetings these days which can be stressful to keep up on everything. But I’ve also surrounded myself with amazing co-workers and I’ve learned to rely more on their capabilities. And I usually spend an hour with my computer just before bed to make sure I’m ready for the next day’s activities.
What book(s) have influenced your life the most? Why?
Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton because it was the first book I read and vividly remember enjoying, couldn’t put it down. Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead for their epic and ambitious stories. Elon Musk’s biography because it made me want to take over the world and gave me an appreciation for what Musk is trying to accomplish, the risks he was willing to take, and the dedication required to succeed.
Do you have any quotes you live by or think of often?
“You gotta spend money to make money” as it’s true in many facets of life. “Go big or go home” reminds me to not be afraid to take risks. “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all” is my philosophy on life and the way we should all treat each other.
